New security system at CIBC building

Commerce Court has an access control system in place called the PAL. The PALs are similar to turnstiles and are located at the ground floor next to the elevators. To reach the Mexican Consulate, you will need to first visit the Concierge Desk in the Main Lobby of Commerce Court West (199 Bay Street) to receive a “Visitor Passcard” for entry through the PALs.

FAQs

1.What is PAL? PAL stands for Pedestrian Access Lane. Very simply, the PAL is a computerized system that monitors access to tenant floors of Commerce Court West. It allows tenants to enter and exit freely and requires those visiting or with infrequent access to be registered by an authorized tenant.

2.Why was PAL installed? The Management of Commerce Court believes that access management helps to create a safer environment for employees and a more secure space from an operational perspective. Access management systems have been in use in international business centres for years and with great success.

3.How do I pass through the PALs?

1.Approach the Concierge Staff and tell them your name and that you would like to visit the Mexican Consulate

2.The Concierge will check to see if your meeting has already been pre-registered on the system by the Consulate
i.If you have already been pre-registered on our system, the Concierge will issue you a Visitor Passcard for entry through the PAL
ii.If you have not been pre-registered, the Concierge will ask to see a piece of Identification. They will then contact someone at the Mexican Consulate who can authorize your visit. A Visitor Passcard will then be issued.

3.Proceed to the elevator bank marked “44-56”. Insert your Visitor Card into the slot marked “VISITOR”. Wait for the beep and the arms of the PAL to drop. Proceed through the PAL to the elevators. The Mexican Consulate is on Floor 44.

4.Do I need to have identification? All visitors who are not pre-registered will need to show a piece of identification to the Concierge staff. Pre-registered guests do not need to show identification upon check-in.

5.Do I have to use my passcard to exit through the PALs? No. As you approach the PALs upon exit, the arms will automatically drop.

6.What will happen if I accidentally insert my card wrong? The PALs are not designed to physically prevent someone from entering. However, if you pass through a PAL without following the proper procedure, an alarm will sound.

7.What should I do if I accidentally cause an alarm? Don’t worry. Commerce Court building personnel will quickly determine the cause of the alarm from their remote viewing centre. Lobby staff will then attend to ensure your card is authorized and will clear the alarm.

8.Can I come and go as I please? Visitor passcards will only work during the Mexican Consulate’s business hours. You may use your visitor passcard to enter the PALs as frequently as you wish throughout the day you receive the passcard. Visitor passcards automatically expire at the end of the Consulate’s business day.

9.Do visitor passcards have to be returned? Visitor passcards are of cardstock material and although not necessary, it is recommended that they are returned to the Concierge Desk so that they may be recycled.
