In honour of the centennial anniversary of the Mexican Revolution & the bicentennial of Mexican Independence, LULAWORLD celebrates the music of Mexico with a night of Son Jarocho and Música Ranchera on Sunday May 16. Featuring Café con Pan, vocalist Cecilia Guerrero, and very special guest Yohualichan direct from Montreal.
Please join us for what will surely be the first interprovincial meeting of son jarocho artists in Canada. The concert will be followed by a traditional, Mexican Fandango!
On Saturday May 15, in anticipation of our evening of live Son Jarocho, LULAWORLD and Cafe Con Pan present a screening of the film Los Soneros del Tesechoacan followed by a Son Jarocho dance and music workshop. Families welcome. Free admission.
On Sunday May 16 Café Con Pan will play son jarocho music from Veracruz with an emphasis on the country roots of the tradition. Alec Dempster and Kali Niño met in 1997 in the small town of Santiago Tuxtla. With the help of dancer Mayahuel Tecozautla and bassist Chris Banks, they take their audiences on a syncopated journey down the dirt roads of Southern Veracruz, where the music still thrives in the fandango celebration.
Cecilia Guerrero is an accomplished singer of Mexican ranchera and norteño music. Cecilia Guerrero began singing professionally at the age of twelve and has performed all over Mexico as well as the United States.
Yohualichan is a versatile folk group created in Montreal in 2004. "Yohualichan" is a Nahuatl word composed of two roots. Yohualli means “night” and chan means “the location of the night” or “place where we can observe stars at night” Their objective is to help people discover the lesser known dance and music of Mexico.
