Press Release No. 200

January 22, 2010

Mexican judges conduct working visit to Canada

Press Release 03-10. Ottawa, Canada, January 21, 2010.- A group of Mexican judges from the states of Chihuahua, Morelos and Zacatecas are conducting a working visit to Canada to expand their knowledge of how oral and adversarial trials are carried out.

The judges aim to exchange experiences that will be useful in implementing the constitutional reforms that entered into force in October 2008, which imply more efficient, transparent criminal proceedings that respect the human rights of both victims and defendants.

Having been invited to attend diverse hearings at various levels, the judges will be able to witness how trials are held in Canada.

The Mexican delegation will visit the Supreme Court of Justice and meet with Canadian judges, magistrates of review or appeals courts, as well as representatives from the police and the Department of Foreign Affairs of Canada (DFAIT). A meeting will also be held with the Ambassador of Mexico in Canada, Francisco Barrio Terrazas, and Embassy officials.

This first visit to Canada by Mexican judicial authorities falls within the framework of legal
cooperation with Canada, a country with which Mexico shares values and positions such as respect for the law, human rights and people’s dignity.

The working visit geared toward improving criminal proceedings in Mexico is being financed by the Mexico Office of the United States’ Agency for International Development (USAID Mexico), a department of the US Government that supports reform initiatives regarding the justice system in Mexico.
