Foreign Secretary Patricia Espinosa participated today in a conference call with her counterparts in Canada, France, the United States, Brazil, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Peru and Argentina and with the Haitian Prime Minister to analyze the situation in Haiti after last Tuesday’s earthquake.
The Foreign Secretary presented a report of the Mexican mission’s activities in Haiti and discussed the initiative presented in the U.N. Security Council to make the U.N. into a key actor during the emergency period as well as over the long term during reconstruction.
She said that the U.N. Security Council must play a more active role in keeping with its responsibilities and she reiterated Mexico’s support for the work of the international community.
She stressed the logistical role that Mexico could play due to its geographic location and she suggested an evaluation of the earthquake’s impact on Haiti’s long-term social and economic condition.
She also repeated Mexico’s commitment to supporting the strengthening of Haiti’s capacity both to manage the crisis and to rebuild the country.
The participating Foreign Secretaries agreed to meet on January 25 in Montreal, Canada to continue discussing Haiti’s situation and best practices to make international aid for Haiti more effective.
